Women of Progress of Mississippi held their 46th annual Kwanzaa celebration Thursday at the Two Mississippi Museums. The weeklong celebration props up African-American culture every year, right after Christmas Day.

The candle lit on the first day of Kwanzaa symbolizes unity, as did the crowd that gathered for the third annual Motor City Kwanzaa Kinara lighting ceremony in downtown Detroit. Unity, or "umoja" in Swahili, is the most important of the seven principles of Kwanzaa, said Jamon Jordan, the City of Detroit's historian.

Wichita’s African American Council of Elders hosted its 20th annual Kwanzaa celebration at The Center on Thursday.
