Benjamin Netanyahu's government has resisted calls to open a state inquiry into its responsibility for the breach that resulted in 1,200 Israelis killed and about 250 hostages taken.

Israel’s military chief of staff, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, has said he will resign in March over the failure to prevent the October 7 attack.

Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, who has commanded the Israeli military throughout 15 months of war in Gaza, said he was resigning over its failure to protect against the 2023 assault.
