Jan. 20, the Chapel Hill community gathered at a ceremony organized by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WBNG) -- Broome-Tioga NAACP observed Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday with a celebration of his life and legacy at United Presbyterian Church.

Martin Luther King Jr. falls on the third Monday of January every year. The holiday means the closure of state offices, courts, public schools, universities and other businesses and individuals are encouraged to celebrate the holiday by volunteering.

JACKSON, Tenn. — There was a full day of events held by the Jackson-Madison County branch of the NAACP. Many people gathered at the T.R. White Sportsplex Monday morning for a celebration of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which started with a breakfast.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is about unity, the celebration of King’s accomplishments and continuing to dream of peace, said Lenoir-Rhyne University students.

In spite of the temperatures that were lower than usual, activities celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day continued on Monday.

The Rochester NAACP took the Med City Community on a march through the skyway as part of its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations on Monday, Jan. 20.

A heartfelt breakfast honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. took place at Greater Bethel AME Church in Panama City on Jan. 18.

King Day at the Dome started in 2000 as a protest to the Confederate flag flying over the State House dome and inside both legislative chambers.

On Monday, dozens gathered at the El Pueblo History Museum in Pueblo to honor Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and carry on his legacy of advocating for change and inspiring others.
