Promotion/relegation is a competition format that is often used in many countries for professional leagues as a way to have many teams participate and yet not dilute the top level of play, by only allowing the best teams to play in the highest division while leaving a path to the top open for lower teams, should they improve enough to reach it.

This is very different to European football leagues where promotion and relegation is practiced. A small number of teams that finish last in a season are relegated to the lower league, and the top teams of the lower league are promoted to replace them. Has there been a time where the North American major leagues practiced promotion and relegation?
